Notes

MCB & TMM:

I checked the weather and water levels this morning and decided to fish one of the lower sections of the LJ. I went over to Petersburg and parked below the 305 bridge and fished upstream until I was at that old trailer and bus that sits right along one of the big curves in the LJ. I like to fish this section a couple of times each year even though there is a big flat part right above the bridge. I usually can catch a couple of different kinds of fish and they are usually big fish in this lower section of the LJ. That was the case this morning.

I caught 20 fish. I started with two fallfish, the first one was 14 inches, the second one was 15 inches. Then I caught a big rockbass, it was a 10 inch rock bass, and it's been a long time since I caught a red eye that size. Next I caught a 10 inch smallmouth and an eight inch smallmouth. Finally, I was getting into the upper section of that flat and I hit a 15 inch brown trout. From that point until I finished fishing this morning I caught 12 more brownies and they were almost all big fish. The smallest browns that I caught this morning were two 10 inch brown trout, but the others were all 13,14,15, and 16 inch brown trout. Fish number 20 was a 16 inch brown trout that I pulled out of the big flat section next to the old bus and trailer place. The smalles fish I caught this morning was one 6 inch smallmouth bass that I caught between some of the brownies.

I also hooked two more big fellows, one I actually saw and it may have been the biggest fish of the morning, the other I never saw, but surely felt. Both of these big guys managed to snap off my spinners, so I never got to measure or count them. There are a lot of big fish in that section of the LJ. I don't mind catching some big fall fish or smallies or really anything that will hit my silver spinner. Sometimes it's fun when you aren't sure what's on the other end of your line. Compared to fishing Spring last Friday, today was a much better experience. For one thing I didn't have to clean my spinner after every cast and this section of the LJ was really at a good level for wading and spin fishing. When the LJ is high, this section has too much water in it for me to wade safely.

All in all a great day on the LJ!
