Notes

MCB & TMM:

We had thunderstorms here last night and they also had them in State College. I checked the water levels on Spring this morning and it had already returned to a fairly low summer level. However it was a bit higher than it has been, so I thought it may be a good morning for spin fishing it. I was wrong. Every cast I had to clean the spinner and when you aren't catching many fish, that becomes a big pain in the ass.

I went to the Paradise and walked way back in. I walked for 30 minutes and started upstream from the old hatchery ponds. Which, by the way, apparently aren't being used any longer. I fished to above the old dam that is right where the prison land begins. I fished into the prison section, but it didn't make any difference. I only caught 7 brownies this morning and that's got to be one of my worst mornings on Spring in a long time. The last fish I caught was a nice 15 inch brown that I caught right above the old dam. The other six trout were all fairly big in the 10-11-12 inch range, but of course I only caught 7 fish in 2.5 hours.

I did see a monster of a snapping turtle. I was fishing one of the flat sections and I saw what I thought was a log drifting downstream toward me. When it got closer I saw it was a really big snapping turtle. It probably is the biggest snapper, I have every encountered fishing. I mean he was a really big fellow. I don't know what the PA record is for snapping turtles, but this one had to be in the running. It was the most exciting thing that happened on Spring this morning. There wasn't anyone else fishing as far back as I was, but that didn't seem to have much of an effect on the number of trout that I found this morning. The water was murky, so maybe I have to start waiting until it becomes clearer before I hit the streams. Oh well, so much for this week and there is always next week and the week after that.
