Notes

Fish were not rising. I came in on Cow Creek road and drove to the Village. Then Indrove up to Danskin. There were 40 or 50 prople fishing today all along the river. There were some bugs. I saw some midges, and some bwo’s. I only saw one fish rise. I fished up near Danskin Brigde. Since there was no hatch my tie on fly was an Olive slow stone #10. I went to Danskin and crossed the bridge. I started across from boat ramp. Nothing. Then i went further upriver.

Found an area where a back channel meets the main river. There was an S turn in the river. The water was fast through the S turn. There was a section of slow water, kind of a back eddy. It looked like it might hold fish.

I cast up to the transition of fast to slow. I stayed 25 to 30 feet back. After a few casts I watched as my fly disappeared and it looked like a fish ring on the surface, mear where my fly should be. It was hard to see the fly. I did not feel anything but I set the hook and fish-on!

The fish had quietly sucked the fly but I saw enough to set the hook. The fish was a beautiful rainbow about 18”. It was fat. This was the largest fish I have caught on the SFB. So, a great start to the day.

No more bites so I moved on upriver. There was an area thaf looked like fish might be eating but I saw no heads rise, just suble rings. I tried a bwo emerger, blood emerger, bwo comparadun. No takes. I saw one fish rise once.

I went back to the place where i caught the fish. I tied in a Brown Slow Stone #10. I was having s hard time seeing my fly but I tried to guage about where it was. Afrer a few casts I saw a ring that looked like a fish had eaten at the surface. I felt no tug until I set the hook and once again, fish-on!

I went down river a short way to where the S turn hot the far bank. I tried sating back upstream but it was a difficult cast because of where I was and the shore and trees behind me. It was too deep and fast to wade very far. I was retrieving ancast and a fish rose up and took the fly about 10 feet in front of me. It surprised me and I didn’t get a good hook set. It shook the hook. So that was one fish on an olive slow stone and two fish on anbrown slow stone. I then stopped to wat and moved downriver into the canyon. There were some little boulders along the left bank ( looking upstream). I cast upstream at a quarter angle with the brown slow stone and got a false take. No more action. I changed flies to a bwo comparadun, mahogany seaecher, bwo convertible. Nothing.

I went back to my little eddy and tried again but nothing. I moved upstream but nothing. No rising fish and no interest in the slow stone.
