Notes

MCB, TMM, & BD:

I planned to fish this morning since about Saturday of last week, so I did, even though it was only 34 degrees here when I left the house. It was a bit too chilly for me for at least the first hour or so this morning. My hands just can't take the cold like they used to be able to do. By the time I quit at about 11:00, it was starting to get fairly nice.

I really wanted to fish the LJ this morning, but it was still too high and fast for my taste, so I went to Spring instead. I thought I would fish the section from the Rock road parking area down to the hatchery buildings. So I walked down the path and fished back to my truck. I started fishing about 8:00 and finished about 11:00. When I started there was no other vehicles in the parking area by the old bridge to the hatchery. When I finished, I couldn't believe what I found. There were now 11 cars and trucks parked in that parking area. I'm not sure why or where the people were, because I only saw one fly-guy fishing right at the bridge and two college kids climbing the cliff on the other side of the creek. The gate on the bridge was open, so I suppose something was going on at the hatchery, but I'm not sure.

It was another slow morning fishing. The water temperature was still in the 40's and I prefer it to be in the 50's. I think the trout are a lot more likely to chase the spinner if the water is at least 55 degrees or so. I caught 6 brown trout and 1 rainbow trout. Most of the trout were 9-10 inch trout, with one fairly nice 14 inch brown. I had that section of Spring to myself this morning and didn't see anyone else fishing in that area until I got back to my truck and saw the lone fly-guy fishing the pool at the bridge. It's supposed to get cold again tomorrow and stay that way until Sunday or so. Today will probably be my fishing experience for this week.

Just a note, Spring creek really wasn't very high this morning. It was fine for spin fishing, but we better have a wet spring or Spring Creek is going to be very low again this summer. Usuallly in March, Spring is much higher and faster. In fact there have been a lot of times this early in the year when I didn't fish Spring because it was high and fast. It seems to go down much faster now than it used to and I guess that's not going to change since State College is still growing and paving everything in sight.
