Notes

Karl and I returned to the Grass Hole with the intention of focusing on the Dollies we thought we'd seen previously. I spent the afternoon on the grass banks stalking kings and never convinced one to bit. I put hundreds of good drifts with various patterns right on their noses and they would move 1" to 2" to the side to avoid the fly.

Later on I hooked into a nice unknown fish that took me close to backing, only to lose it with 20' of fly line out. :| I returned to the spot I hooked him and within a couple casts had a second fish on. This time I was able to land the fish and it turned out to be a nice 25" pink. I didn't have any more success after that fish.

I talked to an older native guy about the Dolly Varden - apparently they winter in the ocean and move into the Anchor sometime after the Kings to feed on roe. They usually come in on a big tide, which we had today, but we didn't see them. The guy also mentioned that he hasn't talked to many people catching rainbows in the Anchor, and that at one point years past the locals would kill all rainbows because they didn't want them eating the salmon roe.
