Notes

There were lots of people down in the canyon for the Labor day weekend. Nathan and I started at the run above Cow Creek bridge. He tried fishing upstream a bit; I worked downstream. I found a pod of fish rising to PMDs along the edge. I caught 3 on bh pheasant tails and missed a couple more on nymphs while missing one or two on a yellow cdc biot thorax dun. My PMD patterns are all #16 for the O - I need some #18 and #20 for the SFB.

After that we drove downstream to the long run after the original hole. I didn't find any fish, but Nathan got into a couple risers towards the head of the run. I ended up walking to the Original hole and found fish rising along the edge. I caught 3 on an Elk Hair caddis - no love for the dropper. I returned to find Nathan in the same spot - and found a couple fish still rising. The Flav hatch was getting started. I have no Flav patterns.

Our second to last stop was at the CS 4 run. Fish were rising like mad - across the river in the slack area. There were only a couple fish rising on our side of the river, and I have no idea what they were taking. The wind was ridiculous.

We finished the night upstream a ways. Fish were going crazy at dusk, as were the bats, and I have no idea what was hatching. The wind made casting difficult.

All in all a fun day. Could have been very good if the wind wasn't so windy. Good to see the PMD hatch in the early afternoon, then Flavs in the evening, but I have no idea what was going on at dusk. Fish were jumping out of the water. Caddis perhaps? But I didn't see too many caddis around the water at dusk.

[edit]
I talked to Chris today about the dusk hatch and he said there's a #12 caddis that's hatching right at dusk. That explains the exhuberant rises.
