Notes

MCB, TMM, and BD:

I fished the LJ in the Barree gorge this morning. I go to the parking area at the end of the trail about 6:45 and was the only person there. I walked back the trail until I was at the second RR bridge above the parking area. I usually start at the first RR bridge and finish my morning at the big island above the 2nd. RR bridge. However, when I do that, by the time I get past the 2nd RR bridge there are almost always fly-guys fishing the nice water below the big island. I got to fish all that water this morning and just as I got to the island, about 9:15 or so, the first fly-guy showed up, but it didn't bother me because I had already fished some good water. The fly-guy went up the left hand side of the island, where I had planned to go, but I just went up the right hand channel instead. By the time I fished a bit above the island and decided to call it a day, at least three more fly-guys had walked back in and were fishing.

I had a good morning, which I'm sure had to do with the water conditions a lot more than my skills. We had thunderstorms last night and the streams where up a little, coming down this morning, and nice and murky. Just the way I like them for spin fishing. I caught 27 trout, all browns, the biggest ones were a couple of 13 inch trout, but most of them were nice trout in the 10-12 inch range. I only caught a couple of trout smaller than 9 inches and again I didn't catch a single fingerling. This morning's trout weren't nearly as big as the fish I caught last week below Petersburg, but I did catch about 9/hour which is better than I often do. All in all a good morning.

When I got back to my truck there were five other vehicles there. Three of them were from Virginia, one from Pittsburgh, and one was probably local. I guess the price of gas isn't high enough to help relieve the pressure on the LJ. As I drove back home, every pull-off along the LJ had one or more vehicles in them and guys fishing most of the good runs. Maybe I do Spring tomorrow or the Little Bald Eagle or Kish, who knows?
