Notes

The early regional opening day of trout season came with dampness and chill in the air. I made the three and a half hour trip to a friend's house the night before, and we were up by five to eat and make the one hour trip to French Creek. Arriving at the water I soon realized the extent of the low water levels I had been reading about. The pool we were going to fish was nearly surrounded, but the top and bottom ends had room left. I went to the top end to wait for the clock to strike eight, not knowing I picked the wrong end of the pool. Everyone cast in at eight and the surface erupted with trout fighting back against the fishermen lucky enough to get hooked up on their first cast. I soon realized just how bad my decision was to step in at the top end of the pool. I only caught two Fallfish and had zero bites from trout until nearly noon. As people started leaving for lunch, I was able to get closer to the center of the pool where the trout all seemed to be stacked up. In the half hour before lunch I managed to catch four Brown Trout. After lunch the fishing got much better, I think mainly because I was able to get right into the pool where the majority of the fish were. I was also able to pick up a few Brown Trout on Roostertails and my black/gold Rebel Crawdad in the faster water above the pool. My largest fish of the day came on the first cast with the Rebel Crawdad, a fourteen inch Brown, as my friend laughed about my lure choice. The day ended with a decent Brown to make five on the stringer, and I headed back to the truck, tired, sore and generally worn out. It was time for some sleep to get me chagred back up for the next morning of fishing and my long drive home.
