Notes

I started off deep trolling with my sinking line with a leech as I paddled across the reservoir, trying to go up the south fork arm. I caught one rainbow by the convergence, then paddled west to some short, rocky cliffs. I tried various speed retrieves and flies and didn’t catch much. I paddled back across the convergence and started working east on the south side of the reservoir. I got a couple hits and perhaps landed a couple trout, then I ran into something interesting: a 40’ piece of land with brush and such that extended from the shore into water (most of the shore is just rocks). Occasionally there would be several tiny baitfish that would jump out of the water in a spot – I assumed because the school of baitfish would get chased by a predatory fish. So I switched to a floating line and one of my bass poppers and tried casting out and retrieving it over the brush and the baitfish and had no luck. Then on one cast I let it sit on top for perhaps 30 seconds then had a big splashy rise – I fought the fish in and it ended up being a fat carp. I released him and tried a similar approach. After a couple casts I caught another carp.

By this time it was evening so I tied on a leech with some split shot on the floating line and started trolling some more. I caught occasional trout. I worked my way back to the north shore of the reservoir as it was close to dark, and once on the north shore (shallower, sandy bottom I think) I started catching trout consistently trolling. I finally stopped catching fish as it got too dark to really see much, except for a brilliant moon. But for the last 30 minutes or so, I caught 5+ fish all in the 14-16” range.
