Notes

I arrived at the trailhead and started hiking up to the lake around 6:45pm. I knew in advance I was pushing time but did it anyway. The hike was easy for the first bit, then started getting rough as I got closer to the big ridge. I arrived at the base of the ridge at sunset and took some very nice pictures, then continued climbing. It was dark well before I made it to the ridge and I remember wishing I had someone packing with me because the ridge climb wasn’t easy, I had lost the trail and was climbing up steep rock, and had to use my new headlamp. I successfully made it to the ridge sometime after 10pm and was greeted with one of the most amazing sights ever – a huge moon was rising up over the lake and I was there to see it from the top of the ridge. Breathtaking. I took many pictures before working my way down the ridge to the lake (not an easy hike). I set up my tent in the dark and went to bed.

In the morning I hiked around the lake surveying for the large trout I was hoping for but was greeted with only small trout. Disappointing. In the late morning I was fishing off a huge rock that created a small cliff into the water. I would see the occasional fish swim by, then saw a nice 12” fish swim by that was by far the biggest fish I saw that weekend. He was cruising along the cliff away from me so I laid out a cast perhaps 5’ ahead of him, where I couldn’t see him or the fly, and let the fly sink. He ended up hitting the fly.

I caught a few more fish but nothing noteworthy so I headed out pretty early Sunday morning. The hike wasn’t bad until the end. At one point I set my pack down and had my camera case hooked around the belt. Well, the case fell off when I put the pack back on and I didn’t know it. I wasn’t on the trail (it was hard to follow) and had bushwhacked through some 8’ bushes and other crap by the time I realized I didn’t have my camera. I gave up quickly and finished the hike in a very pissy mood. I was mainly disappointed that the pictures I had taken of the moonrise over the lake were lost.
