Notes

It began raining after dark Friday night and POURED all night - over 1.5 inches of rain. Saturday morning I slept in again because of the constant rain. I left around 11:30am to start fishing and Derek arrived just then. We started fishing a few holes in the rain but it was very cold (40s) and hard rain. The water was finally starting to rise thanks to the rain and was quite stained. We could only fish each hole for perhaps 30 minutes before needing to go to the car to warm up frozen hands. There were ZERO insects out because of the 3 straight days of rain, and fish were not rising at all. I caught 5 fish in 7+ hours of fishing, and Derek and Michelle did not do any better using subsurface nymphs and streamers. We fished all the way up Kelly Creek. On the way back to camp that night I chased a moose down the road for probably 2 miles.

Overall analysis:
There were tons of caddis that came out Saturday night and were attracted to the lamp. If it had not rained constantly, I do believe I would have been in the middle of the most amazing fishing ever. I nailed the October caddis hatch just about right - unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. Total fish caught: 33 or so. Rises: well over 100.

Heading home Sunday night, I stopped to check out the middle Clearwater upstream of Kooskia and was almost swarmed by October caddis at dark. The hatch was unbelievably thick, with insects resting on riparian vegetation at the rate of one insect per 6-8" of stem. Amazing. ZERO fish in the Clearwater - I fished a poor stretch where the river bottom is a solid slab of basalt - not many bigger boulder to break flow, and not many smaller boulders and such for insects. I guess. But there were tons of adult caddis.
