Notes

I got on the water around 3 or 3:15 and caught a 12" within 5 minutes on a black leech. From 3:15 to 6 I caught 9 fish, the smaller ones on the leech and the larger ones on the Stayner Ducktail trailer. Then I went back and Karl and I ate a sandwich and had a beer. I waded a bit out from shore and caught one and had another on. Then went back out in the fishcat around 6:45 and had little action for 1/2 an hour, then it got pretty good again as I had trolled back to my money spot. I ended up with 17 rainbows. Most of the fish I caught were in an area that was 20-40’ away from shallow, semi-submerged bushes. I tried to focus on shallower areas near vegetation as that’s where I got most of my hits. I only had a couple hits trolling out in open water.

To start I was fishing a california black leech in front with a midge pupa in back. I think most of the fish I caught were 5-8' deep. I caught a couple small ones on the leech. I switched the back fly to a Stayner Ducktail and proceeded to catch an 18", 16", and 14" on that while catching a couple 12" on the leech. Then I lost the only 2 Stayner Ducktails I had around 6:30pm and was no longer catching fish on the leech, so in the evening I switched to a prince nymph up front and a Rio Grande King in the rear and filled out the rest of my catch. Two notable fish not taken into account above:

1 - I had a fish in the evening that hit my line and jumped almost immediately 2' out of the water. Then he shot in like a torpedo to me and I couldn't reel/strip line in fast enough to keep up. Next he jumped within 10' of my boat and was a very very nice fish. I continued trying to strip in line to catch up to him and finally did get it in enough to feel tension on him but then he did some wobbling stuff underwater and shook the fly. He was pretty big.

2 - At dusk, as I was trolling back to the car, I had a fish on for at least 10 minutes. I had to keep switching hands because of the strain. The fish jumped once and was big. I finally got him in close to the fishcat and tried to net him. The first time I missed him, then the second time he didn't fit. His head and part of his body fit in but the other half of his body and his tail were all out. He flipped once and got out of the net and I tried scooping him up onto my apron and he flipped off of that and broke my leader. 20-22"…….

The wind died down a little at dusk to a nice 5-10mph, and you could see big dorsal fins plucking midge pupa and such just under the surface. There were some big fish rising but I didn't feel like switching lines to a floating line, plus it was still too windy for my tastes. And I had a long way to get back to the car, so it was easier to keep the sinking line on and troll back.

Karl had a slower go of it in the afternoon but did well in the evening. He landed 1 18" and 1 19" and had several take his fly.
