Notes

I arrived before Zak and started walking the southwest shore in search of crusing or rising trout. I scared off one trout but that's it in 50 yards of shoreline. Zak arrived and we fished off a point for a bit. I tried a few retrieves with a small pheasant tail and copper john with no success. I then tried a hang-and-bob with a bh pt and various small droppers with no success. I didn't see any trout in the clear water cruising or anything. We then walked to the northwest corner of the pond where a good portion of the bottom is only mud, no weed beds, and saw several large trout cruising close to the bottom. I had seen several large swarms of mating chironomids over the shore and assumed the trout were cruising for midge larvae or pupae.

With my floating line I tried a 10-11' leader with a #14 hare's ear and a trailing black chirono-cone. With a slow wiggle-retrieve I was able to catch 2 10" rainbows in a matter of 10 minutes but that's it.Zak left and I took his spot and saw lots of deeper crusing fish. I tried a bristle leech with interesting results. The wind was chopping up the surface occasionally so I couldn't always tell where trout were exactly. With one fish I thought he was close enough so I twitched the fly and saw the fish react to it. I wasn't sure if he had taken the fly so I tried setting the hook, but the fish hadn't taken it. The leech swam towards the surface and the fish followed it for a bit before breaking away. It was getting dark and I wasn't able to see fish well enough to continue with it. I tried some multiple-rolls with the leech with no success. I tried retrieving nymphs with no success, either on the bottom or mid-level.

Hatch: #24-#26 black chironomid adults swarming over shore; many damselflies on shore
