Notes

MCB, TMM, & BD:

It was 54 degrees when I got up at 5:00 AM. They were saying there could be some light rain, but it sounded like a good morning for a little trout fishing. I had to decide whether I wanted to fish some section of Spring creek or maybe fish the DHALO section of the LJ. The sections I usually fish on the LJ are still mostly higher and faster than I prefer, so I picked the DHALO section and drove through beautiful downtown Skelp to get to it.

I drove downstream to the start of the DHALO section, parked, put on my gear and fished for about 2.5 hours until the stream started to get crowded. For the first hour and a half I had the stream to myself, then two guys came downstream stream from the highway bridge and both of them were spin fishing. Before they came through I had caught 11 trout, after we passed each other I only caught 2 more trout in the last hour or so of fishing. I also had to get out before I got to the bridge because there were 3 or 4 fly-guys fishing below the bridge. I had planned on fishing a bit above the bridge this morning because I have never fished that section before, but by that time I figured I would just walk back to the truck , eat my lunch, and head for home.

It was a bit unusual morning for me because I caught mostly brook trout and I really don't catch many brook trout on the streams that I normally fish. The brookies were all stocked trout and all 10 of them were 10-12 inches in length. I also caught two brown trout and one of them was actually a wild brown. Both were 11-12 inches. I caught one 12 inch rainbow. The stocked trout all looked like twins and of course were not very pretty trout. The one wild brown was so much more colorful that it was really easy to tell it apart from the the stocked trout. The people that only catch stocked trout really don't know what they are missing. The stocked brook trout were so pale that it was hard to tell that they were actually brook trout. I only missed a couple of fish this morning, so even if my reflexes were better I wouldn't caught many more fish. This could be the only day this week that I manage to get on the stream, so I'm glad it was a fairly good day.
