Notes

Karl and I packed into Hell Roaring in the early afternoon. It was partly cloud and pretty nice, really. We camped at the NW corner of the lake by the large inlet stream and were immediately greeted with huge quantities of mosquitoes. And of course neither of us brought repellent. I was surprised that the whole area around the lake was devoid of snow.

Karl waded out a bit and fished where the inlet stream flowed into the lake and caught nothing. He waded around to the inlet stream on the west side and caught nothing. Both him and I saw no fish rise nor any fish in the shallows. We walked up to the upper HR lake and saw absolutely no sign of fish. The water was extremely clear and when the wind didn’t blow you could see down 30-40 feet without a problem and there was no sign of fish. No rises, no cruisers. I made 15 casts with a sinking line and leech and felt nothing. The water was a bitter 39F. There was some snow in patches around the lake, but it had definitely been iced off for quite some time, even at 8200’.

On the walk out Sunday morning, Karl and I saw several rises out in the middle of the lake on the eastern end. The fish were out at least 150’. So there are fish in HR, but they are still concentrated in the middle in the early part of the year.
