Notes

MCB, TMM, & BD:

I decided to fish the Stone this morning for the first time this year. I had a couple of suggestions from Bernie where to fish this morning, but I thought I would try Kriedler's since it doesn't get much pressure and I haven't fished it for at least a year. I parked at the mattress hole and walked downstream to the edge of the Toner Camp property and fished back to the bridge at Martin's gap. I only caught about three fish before I got close to Ben's house and the mattress hole and then I started to catch some rainbow trout. I figured I would have this entire section to myself because I almost never see anyone else fishing on Ben's property. When I got to the bend at the mattress hole I heard some talking and saw a red pickup truck sitting next to my truck. It was some black guy and his white girl friend. He claimed he was a buddy of Ben and had permission to fish, so I just walked around the best hole on the section and kept fishing upstream. About 15 minutes later he and his girlfriend took off, so when I walked back to the truck, I gave the mattress hole a try even though I saw him catch a couple of trout and put them in his bucket. I caught three fish in about 5 minutes, two rainbows and a brown. I was surprised that I could catch anything in that hole because it had been fished maybe 40 minutes before. I guess I'll check with Ben and see if he has a black buddy that he lets fish on his property.

I had a fairly good morning and caught 17 fish in a little over three hours. Four of them were fall fish, but the fall fish were all at least 10 inches, and were very active this morning. I caught one 9 inch small mouth bass! The best part of the morning was the 7 rainbows that I caught. All of the trout I caught this morning were stocked trout and the rainbows were all about 11-12 inches, so they were nice fish. The biggest fish was a 12-13 inch rainbow. I also caught 5 browns, but they were a bit smaller than the rainbows, and they were also all stocked fish. The water temperature of the Stone this morning was 62 degrees and that's the warmest water I have fished in so far this Spring. When you consider that I was fishing slightly downstream from where the East Branch dumps a nice shot of cold water into the Stone, I would imagine that the Stone gets warmer and warmer as you get closer to Huntingdon. Maybe in the next week or so, I'll fish the Stone behind Donation for smallmouth bass. I have had some good bass mornings in that section, but I haven't fished it for a couple of years.

We are supposed to get a lot of rain tonight and tomorrow, so I don't know how much fishing I will get in during the rest of this week. So many fish to catch, so little time! Heh, Heh!
