Notes

I am not a very good spring creek fisherman. I began walking downstream from the hatchery-output confluence with the creek. I walked around the bend and realized I had walked into a nice long run, but it was hard to notice until I had already walked into it. I scared lots of decent 14” trout. I continued walking down the run because I thought it would end, but it didn’t and I kept scaring fish. K I got to where the pipe crossed the water and waded to the east side of the river and went down below the hole and scared lots of fish in a deep, skinny, weed-lined run. I tried nymphing up into the big hole with zero success. Wait, I caught a couple tiny trout and 1 10”. After fishing it for some time I gave up and started wading/fishing downstream. Hole after hole, I would wade too far before realizing I had just scared away lots of trout in a prime hole.

A ways down, Karl and I were walking and I decided to fish what I figured would be a decent spot. My first drift through with a hare’s ear netted a 10” rainbow. A couple casts later I caught a 12” brown. I lost a couple flies on a snag in thorny bushes. I had a few hits where I was nymphing the other side of the creek, then letting the line straighten and swing across the current. I then caught one more 10” rainbow.

I walked downstream to find Karl fishing a huge, deep hole that would seemingly be hard to fish with a fly rod. He caught a few small trout, but I would think unless the trout were at the tail of the hole rising to adults, one would need to use lots of split shot to try to sink the fly in a few seconds to get down to any of the decent-sized fish.

Soon after I decided to head back up. I fished the nice hole that I had tried stalking earlier in the day, where I caught 1 fish over a long period, and the fish began slurping at something under the surface. Karl and I could not detect anything on top the water, so I’m not sure what the fish were rising to. I fished until it was dark and we left. Frustrating.

Hatch: small tan midges, not sure what else
Underwater insect retrieval: lots of #20-#24 olive scuds
